LASIK Q & A

What is LASIK surgery?

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery is a type of refractive surgery that permanently changes the shape of your cornea so you can see more clearly. The LASIK procedure uses an excimer laser to cut a flap in your cornea so Dr. Whitson can fold it back. Using a computer-controlled laser, she vaporizes a portion of the stroma, or middle section of your cornea, and replaces the flap.

The result is a precisely reshaped cornea that allows your eye to function optimally so you can see without glasses or contacts. Sometimes the results are immediate, and sometimes it takes a day or two to notice a significant improvement in your vision.

What vision problems does LASIK surgery correct?

LASIK eye surgery corrects a number of common vision problems, including:

  • Astigmatism
  • Myopia (nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Presbyopia (loss of near focusing ability due to age)

Dr. Whitson and the team at Whitson Vision evaluate your eyes and overall health to determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery, and if so explain what results you can expect. They conduct a thorough exam of your eye health, including your retina and cornea, using their state-of-the-art diagnostic technology.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK surgery?

In addition to conducting a comprehensive eye exam, you may be a good candidate for LASIK surgery if:

  • You’re at least 18 years old
  • You don’t have an autoimmune disease like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis
  • You aren’t pregnant or nursing
  • Your vision prescription falls within certain criteria
  • If you have diabetes, it’s well-managed
  • You don’t have any type of eye disease, severe cataracts, or optic nerve disease
  • You’re committed to following preoperative and postoperative instructions while you recover from surgery

Dr. Whitson and the team at Whitson Vision perform an evaluation to determine if you can benefit from this potentially life-changing vision procedure.

Is LASIK surgery safe?

The LASIK procedure using the excimer laser is very safe. The laser generates its power from light that you can’t see with your eyes, without generating any heat. This eliminates the risk of thermal tissue damage during the procedure.

Additionally, LASIK only removes a microscopic layer of corneal tissue that’s equivalent to one-tenth the width of a human hair.

Dr. Whitson and the team at Whitson Vision are highly skilled in LASIK vision correction. Call the office to schedule a consultation or book an appointment online today to discover if LASIK surgery is right for you.
