Dr. McManis attended three years at Ball State University where he was awarded a National Research Grant with the Biology Department and spent two years in a nationally recognized study into cancer cells before being accepted into the prestigious Optometry program at Indiana University, where he completed his BS degree in Optometry in 1983 and completed the program with his Doctor of Optometry degree in 1985.

He opened his own practice in Sheridan, Indiana in 1986, and after several years he was offered a position at Lafayette Eye Center in Lafayette, IN where first he met and worked with Dr. Whitson. After a few years, Dr. McManis joined Dr. Whitson in Indianapolis on research projects for LASIK and specialty lens implants. After the studies were completed, Dr. McManis returned to the Lafayette Eye Center where he practiced for 17 years.

Dr. McManis joined a glaucoma specialty practice in Toledo, OH for several years, followed by a non-profit community health center in Cincinnati, OH. Hoping to return to central Indiana for family reasons, he was thrilled to return to Whitson Vision and officially rejoined the practice in November 2021. He sees patients daily in clinic and also works with the Michael Washburn Center for Ophthalmic Research on various eye studies.

Patients often comment that they appreciate that he takes the time to explain what is wrong in ways they feel comfortable with and understand. Dr. McManis is always happy to have new patients.
