PRK Indiana
(Photo-Refractive Keratectomy)

PRKPhoto-Refractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a refractive surgery used to enhance vision for patients. PRK was approved by the FDA in 1995 and was the first refractive surgery to use a laser. The cornea is reshaped using an excimer laser. PRK can help to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Dr. Whitson will be able to determine if PRK is the right procedure for you. Depending on the severity of your current level of vision, it will determine how much epithelial tissue is removed from the cornea. Typically it is between 5% to 10%. PRK differentiates itself from LASIK because Dr. Whitson does not have to create a corneal flap. Since the surgery is performed directly on the surface of the cornea, the healing process takes longer than it would during LASIK. Dr. Whitson will provide you with a list of post-operative care instruction following surgery. PRK can successfully achieve the same level of vision correction as LASIK.
